I read on a friend's facebook today a status update that said:

LindseyLohan who? I cant believe the news coverage being given 2 a spoiled
20-something yr old. Here are a few 20 year-olds worth knowing about: Justin Allen 23, Brett Linley 29, Matt Weikert 29, Justus Bartett 27, Dave Santos 21, Chase Stanley 21, Jesse Reed 26, Matthew King 23, Christopher Goeke 23, and Sheldon Tate 27. These 20-somethings gave their lives for you this week. Repost if you support the Military
First, I'm sure that some of you may have guessed that this irritates me purely on the basis of it's poor grammatical structure and use of texting short hand.

Second, those twenty-somethings gave their lives for a government that doesn't give a crap about them. I was no where in their minds as they road off into their own personal sunset.

Mostly though, this friend has proved herself to be awfully naive here. News organizations don't really care about what's going on in the world. Their goal is not to inform you of the events that are important to your life. They, like everyone else in a capitalist society are doing whatever it takes to make a buck. By and large, the people who bitch about the plight of the soldier not getting the coverage it deserves are the same consumerist sheep that drive the system that prefers a good headline to a realistic view of the world.

Americans have been mired in a swamp of economic upheaval longer than any of the other industrialized nations who are just beginning to feel the sting of one of the worst "recessions" the world has ever seen. The last thing that your average American wants to see is how many of our sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, husbands, wives, brothers and sisters we've lost in a war that has nothing at all to do with us and everything to do with the pocket books of the rich.

If you want to see something on the news aside from which media created twenty something skank is headed to jail this month then stop watching TMZ and quit adding to the hit count on their youtube clips. There are no soldiers being helped by your silly self-righteous Facebook post. It is only a way for you to feel like you are doing something from your desk chair.

A post on facebook isn't support of the military. If you want to support the military tell a soldier, a sailor, a marine, or an airman that you appreciate them. Get involved with organizations that send home baked treats to military men and women in combat zones or organizations that support military families who have a parent over seas. Don't say something about it. Do something about it.

And stop trying to make me feel guilty for watching Lindsay Lohan Cry like a bitch on national television while I think about what I'd do to her if she was my cell mate. BTW, TMZ ran a story about a Hustler XXX Untrue Hollywood Story "Lindsay Goes to Jail" and the "bitchy whore" that plays Lindsay is a friend of mine from high school. So I don't actually have to imagine, I can just pirate the movie when it comes out.

Kudos! What make this FB update even worse, is that it's not even an original thought. Google the entire message to see what I mean. It's just a further symptom of idiots being force fed their opinions then regurgitating them.

Do you know for a fact that the person who posted that DOESN'T get involved in those kinds of things? You'd feel awfully bad if they in fact did get involved in helping the troops wouldn't you? I've posted things like that on Facebook myself, but I also send several packages a month over to soldiers and to help children in Iraq and Afghanistan (the troops distribute these packages), I'm a member of Adopt A US Soldier, I work hard with them, so do other members of my family, but it isn't something I've had to mention much until recently when some people have gone on a tirade against our troops and made some nasty remarks. So you never know, you may be berating this person not knowing some crucial details. I agree with the sentiment of that person's FB post, who the fuck cares about Lindsay Lohan and if you do, shame on you. We SHOULD care more about those troops over there giving their lives for a lie. It's disgusting but it's turning into another VietNam where I see assholes blaming the troops and not the corrupt, fucked up government for the shit storm.

Argent, read my reply. It's an internet "feel good" bullshit quote people with no personal substance put on their Facebook status update to sound insightful. You can find it all over Google.

Yes, true enough but that doesn't mean the person doesn't get involved and do things. A lot of people throw around those things, ever gotten an email from a relative? That's all my relatives know how to email I think. Doesn't mean they're not involved in doing things to help. It just means they aren't too darned creative with their messages.

I hate when people post Status messages where they attempt to initiate you to repost for some BS reason. Ugh.

You know what Argent, I don't, in fact, know what she does to actually support the military folks that she loves. My point is that that post is bullshit. It's just regurgitated propaganda that doesn't actually do any good for the kids that are out there fighting for a corrupt government that doesn't care about them.

I does however do good for the friends on Facebook that see the post. I have several Facebook friends (real life also) over there. They have lost buddies over there. I can tell you with certainty that they appreciate the fact that somebody gets just how much BS it is to have somebody like her making NEWS when the real news-worthy content is barely a blip. They appreciate that somebody understands that the funeral of a military man or woman who gave their life in service to this (USA) country (even if they may not have chosen the war) is way, way more important and noteworthy than some Hollywood superstar who died at 77 years old. For others, posting the message is a way to support those that support loved ones and friends. I wonder if you understand why in some towns when a body comes back from the middle East people that don't even know the soldier stand on a bridge at attention when the car with the body drive under said bridge. When I was a boy in Delaware (Dover AFB) I used to play flag football when I was little. Every now and then (couple of times over a few years) the game would be stopped when a plane bringing back the men that died in Vietnam was landing (runway was in view of the football field). Usually, one of the MP's at the game (just observing) would get a call that the plane was coming in. He would tell the officials and the game would stop. We all stood at attention until the plane landed and was out of view. Why? I mean, those soldiers did not know we were out there standing at attention! We did not know who was on the plane. More than likely they were not stationed at DAFB. DAFB is where the morgue was located. But go ahead thinking you know why people do the things they do. That is your freedom, protected by those that serve.

That ritual, much like a funeral, does nothing for the dead. It only serves as a way to make the living feel better. That is not to say that I don't think that those rituals are valuable. I do. I have participated in them on more than one occasion. But usually, if I am at a service for someone to whom I was not particularly close, I am there to support my friends or act as a designated driver (I've been to more wakes than funerals).

I'm going to go out on a limb here and postulate that you and I have very different types of friends in the military. I'd be willing to wager that each of mine would express a similar opinion about this little message. They also wouldn't give a shit about Lindsay Lohan. I only REALLy watched that episode of TMZ because I knew that my friend was going to be on it.

As far as my freedom being protected by those who serve, those soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen who are over seas in the middle east aren't fighting a war to protect my first amendment rights. They are there because a corrupt political machine sent them there to protect the balance of their swiss bank accounts. The biggest threat to my constitutional rights isn't some big bad evil empire from the other side of the planet. It's the assholes in the state and federal government who are constantly writing laws that weaken them.
